Grafenried is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of
Grafenried is first mentioned in 1258 as Gravenriet. In 1262 it was mentioned as Riede
Grafenried has an area, as of 2009, of 4.72 km2 (1.82 sq mi). Of this area, 2.61 km2 (1.01 sq mi) or 55.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.65 km2 (0.64 sq mi) or 35.0% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.48 km2 (0.19 sq mi) or 10.2% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.2% is either rivers or lakes.
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 5.5% and transportation infrastructure made up 3.4%. while parks, green belts and sports fields made up 1.1%. 35.0% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 43.9% is used for growing crops and 9.3% is pastures, while 2.1% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.

Grafenried has a population (as of 31 December 2009) of 954 As of 2007, 2.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 7.4%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (95.9%), with French being second most common ( 1.7%) and Italian being third ( 0.3%).
